Causes and types of lipoedema

The cause of lipoedema is still unknown. Besides an association with hormonal changes and phases of weight gain, a family history (genetic predisposition) can also play a role.

Lipoedema causes

The exact mechanism of how and why lipoedema develops is still unknown. Lipoedema almost exclusively occurs in women. It usually starts with phases of weight gain that are often connected to hormonal changes, such as puberty, pregnancy, use of birth control pills, and menopause. Some patients also report similar signs and symptoms of lipoedema in other female family members, so genetics may be a contributing factor. Research on a genetic predisposition for lipoedema is still ongoing.

Types of lipoedema

The buildup of fatty tissue in lipoedema usually occurs symmetrically in both legs, especially the thighs and hips. Less frequently, both arms are involved.

The different types of lipoedema are classified based on the areas of the body they affect. However, those classifications are not always directly relevant for diagnosing and treating your lipoedema, and Healthcare Professionals often don’t use them anymore.

Stages of lipoedema

For a long time, it was assumed that lipoedema would inevitably progress through various stages. However, it is now understood that there is no unavoidable progression from one stage to another.  Usually, weight gain is the reason for the progression of lipoedema. Early and holistic treatment can prevent your lipoedema from getting worse.

The classification into stages is no longer scientifically justified today as symptoms such as pain do not correlate with tissue enlargement or changes in body shape. No matter which parts of your body are affected, lipoedema always requires a holistic treatment.
